Communications & Social Media Work Experience in Coventry (2-Week Placement)

This is an unpaid voluntary work experience placement designed to provide practical experience in charity communications and marketing. Successful applicants will take part in a two-week project, working on a real communications challenge that supports the work of Bardsley Youth Project. Participants will be encouraged to develop creative ideas, research, and produce work that contributes to the charity's activities. Within this structure, the placement is built around you, your interests and the skills you want to develop. Project ideas are discussed and developed with your supervisor to help you get the most out of your experience.

Our charity supports young people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or worried about their housing situation. At the start of the placement, participants will receive an introduction to Bardsley Youth Project, including a tour of the service, health and safety information, and an overview of our work.

The support we provide is as varied as the young people who access our service. Many of our services have grown from our work with local young people and their lived experiences of housing difficulties, helping us develop practical and creative solutions to real-world challenges. Need someone to talk through your housing options with? Come in for a chat. Moved into your own place but don't have a bed or fridge yet? We'll help you access grants and can often provide loan items in the meantime.

We're a small team that cares deeply about what we do. We take our responsibilities seriously, but we also believe trust, authenticity, building relationships and a little fun have an important place in helping young people feel supported. That's part of what makes Bardsley Youth Project such a unique place to work, volunteer and learn.

Why choose Bardsley Youth Project for your placement?

At Bardsley Youth Project, we believe young people have valuable ideas, perspectives and talents to contribute. This placement has been designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience. You won't be making drinks or photocopying paperwork — you'll be working on a real project that contributes to your development.

As part of this placement, you can expect:

  • A project tailored around your interests, learning goals and the charity's communications needs.

  • The opportunity to create work with a genuine purpose that may be used by the charity in real communications activity.

  • Support to build practical skills and confidence, whether you're completely new to communications or already have some experience.

  • Access to equipment and resources to support your project. Participants may also use their own devices, such as laptops, if preferred.

  • The opportunity to create content that could contribute towards a future portfolio, university application, apprenticeship application or CV.

  • Experience working in an environment where individuality, creativity and different perspectives are valued and encouraged.

  • Dedicated supervision sessions and the opportunity to ask questions about the project, the charity and the communications industry.

  • The possibility of receiving a reference following a successful placement.

  • Potential opportunities to continue volunteering after the placement where this is of interest to the participant.

No previous experience is required. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are willing to learn, try new things and make the most of the opportunity.

Projects may include:

  • Understanding and applying a charity's brand voice

  • Planning and creating short-form video content

  • Exploring the role of social media and micro-influencers in service marketing

  • Developing social media campaign ideas

  • Creating promotional materials

  • Blog or vlog content

To support learning, participants will be provided with relevant educational resources and receive dedicated supervision from our Communications & Fundraising Worker. Structured tasks will encourage participants to build practical skills in self-directed learning, making effective use of supervision, market research, communication, digital marketing, content creation, creative workflows and project planning.

At least one day each week (usually Friday) will be allocated to independent project work from home. This may include activities such as video editing, research, creative planning or working through provided learning materials. Additional hybrid working arrangements may also be available depending on the project and individual circumstances, and applicants are encouraged to discuss their preferences during the initial planning conversation.

Participants will have dedicated time with their supervisor to discuss their progress, reflect on their learning and develop their project ideas. Where suitable training sessions or events take place during the placement period, participants may also have the opportunity to attend.

Work experience participants will not have unsupervised contact with vulnerable young people and will not be responsible for delivering direct support services. DBS checks are welcomed but are not essential for communications-based placements that do not involve direct youth work or handling sensitive information. Due to the short-term nature of the placement, Bardsley Youth Project is unable to arrange DBS checks for work experience participants.

We look forward to meeting you!

Rach

P.S. I originally came to Bardsley Youth Project through a college work experience placement and now work here as the Communications & Fundraising Worker. It's a brilliant place to learn, grow and use your creativity for local good. We're a small team who are incredibly passionate about supporting local young people.
